When on-demand business intelligence (BI) pioneer LucidEra unexpectedly closed its doors in June, even hardcore denizens of the cloud were surprised, as seen in the tweets we’ve collected here. (For more on the fall of LucidEra — and the rise of the software-as-a-service BI market — see the LucidEra sidebar in Associate Editor Jessica Tsai’s feature this month, “Intelligence in the Cloud.”)

BI SaaS vendor LucidEra is shutting down but the concept of “BI as a Service” is valid and lessons should be drawn from this early demise.

What’s this about LucidEra? No plan B or interim step, just shut down. Ugh.

LucidEra’s claim that lack of funding not interest killed them suggests they weren’t planning to get money from customers.

Wow. LucidEra is shutting down. They were the great hope for SaaS BI just two years ago.p>

If the SaaS BI mkt oppty is so big (and I think it is big), why are now FIVE companies so focused on carving up LucidEra’s base?

LucidEra - here yesterday gone today?

Bad news about LucidEra -- great idea, good product, just bad time to run out of money.

Sadly, it appears that yes, LucidEra is soon to be no more. Flurry of activity on LinkedIn. Good guys, sad to see this ending.
