VerticalResponse Acquired by Deluxe

Deluxe has acquired email marketing platform provider VerticalResponse for $27 million.

San Francisco-based VerticalResponse provides  email marketing, social media marketing, online event marketing, and other services that are used by more than 800,000 small-business clients worldwide. It employs approximately 110 people.

"VerticalResponse accelerates our Web-based growth efforts with small businesses, adding valuable online promotional and Internet marketing services capabilities," said Lee Schram, CEO of Deluxe, in a statement. "This is a great opportunity for us to strengthen our offerings to small businesses and add a seasoned management team."

"VerticalResponse and Deluxe share the same mission to help SMBs grow by providing affordable, easy-to-use business and marketing solutions," added Janine Popick, CEO and founder of VerticalResponse, in a statement. "Joining Deluxe means we will have resources to build new marketing tools faster and better, enabling small businesses to focus on what they do best: running their businesses."

VerticalResponse will continue to do business under the brand name VerticalResponse and operate from its headquarters in San Francisco,  where it was founded in 2001 by Popick, who will retain her existing title.

Deluxe, which is based in Shoreview, Minn., is best known for printing checks, but in recent years has sought to reinvent itself as a provider of more diversified solutions for small businesses. To that end, last year the company purchased Internet marketing services provider OrangeSoda for $28 million. The company has also expanded into financial services and other diversified services for businesses.
