Yellowfin to Debut Business Intelligence Storyboard

Australia-based Yellowfin, a business intelligence software provider, is launching its Storyboard solution in early December as a way to change how people consume business data and present findings.

Social collaboration has been lauded for its usefulness across the enterprise—from improving sales team effectiveness to interfacing with customers and partners through communities. Yellowfin makes the claim that, in a similar sense, collaboration can be beneficial in data analysis. Other vendors, like IBM, have also eyed collaborative elements in business intelligence solutions such as Cognos Collaboration and Cognos Enterprise.

Essentially, what Yellowfin's Storyboard does is "enable users to integrate fully interactive, data-rich presentations into their natural decision-making processes," according to Yellowfin's CEO Glen Rabie. Yellowfin's enterprise business intelligence solution weds the Storyboard functionality with its Web-based reporting and data analytics features. Within the Yellowfin application, a user can create and share presentations, and slide creators can add public or private notes and comments while setting permissions for visibility and changes.

Additional features for Storyboard, which will be packaged as part of the Yellowfin 6.2 release generally available December 7, include:

Embedded content: Users can add images, graphics, or video to Storyboard presentations;

Interactive reports: Users can add reports to Storyboard slides, with the option to dice reports into multiple sections to compare categorical or sales-specific information;

Filters and drills: Users can apply filters to sort through reports for trends and facts; and

Resizable slide layouts: Users can drag and drop and click and swipe capabilities to alter slides and graphs.

Storyboard's auto-save feature lets users revert to pre-existing presentations if, for instance, a sales rep updating a monthly sales report overrides a report with new information and a sales team wants to compare archival data. Aberdeen Group has reported that collaborative BI deployments can improve employee productivity by 42 percent.
