Sybase Forms New Division; Names Volk Leader

Sybase Inc., an enterprise infrastructure and integration company, announced this week it has created a new Infrastructure Platform Group (IPG) and has named Hewlett-Packard veteran Thomas Volk as executive vice president of the group. According to the company, Sybase formed IPG to assist customers and partners in the selection and delivery of Sybase's comprehensive, modularly integrated, open-infrastructure solutions that form the backbone of enterprise applications. The company says the IPG will be principally responsible for expanding Sybase's market share in enterprise infrastructure software through support of partner channels and Sybase's worldwide sales force. The group includes Sybase's Business Intelligence, e-Business, and Enterprise Solutions divisions, and will provide a combined product focus designed to enhance Sybase's current market position among the leading enterprise infrastructure providers. Sybase says IPG's focus aligns with the company's stated strategy of enabling information liquidity--easy access to the right information, to the right people, anywhere. n his new role reporting directly to John Chen, Sybase chairman, president, and CEO, Volk will manage the IPG's operations, identify and pursue new business opportunities, and develop alternative business channels to complement Sybase's existing direct selling force, the company says. "Thomas is known for his focus on partners and customers," Chen said in a company statement. "His track record in driving and executing business strategies to match the needs of global customers will be invaluable to achieving Sybase's growth and the market positioning goals of the IPG." During his 18-year career at Hewlett-Packard Volk was most recently vice president and general manager of its manufacturing industry business unit, and prior to that held worldwide sales and business management positions at HP. Volk holds a M.A. in Computer Science from the University of Karlsurhe, Germany, and will be based out of Sybase's worldwide headquarters in Dublin, CA.
