Pardee Homes, a Los Angeles--based homebuilder, was tasked with building a new home for the Leomiti/Higgins family. The problem: The house needed to be built in seven days, because Pardee was selected as the featured homebuilder for an episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. To successfully manage the frantic pace of building a home from foundation to roof within one week, Pardee's Extreme Team of builders needed to maintain an exhausting construction pace and manage a minute-by-minute schedule that included supply chain management. The answer arrived when Pardee Homes partnered with Sendia and BlackBerry. For the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project, Sendia modified its existing wireless application to accommodate the rapid construction pace required by Pardee's project managers. The modified application, called Hardhat, allowed project managers to wirelessly access and enter up-to-the-minute data and complex scheduling calculations on their BlackBerry devices through every phase of the construction project. The data was then fed back to a server, where a construction management application returned updates to project managers about construction supplies and their location within the supply chain. In spite of torrential rain storms, Pardee's volunteer team of employees and subcontractors built an energy-efficient home on a small lot for the Leomiti/Higgins family of 11, including their three children, a mother-in-law, and five foster kids. Building a home for a family of 11 in seven days is a tall order, and with numerous delays, fans who viewed the episode thought failure was knocking at the door. Led by Pardee president and CEO Mike McGee, more than 450 people worked around the clock to complete the home. "The teamwork that went into this home was extraordinary, and unrelenting bad weather during our build really dramatized what we already knew--that Sendia, incorporated into our BlackBerrys, was outstanding," McGee says. "Pardee's entire Extreme Team really came through."
