Microsoft Acquires Big Data Solution Provider Metanautix

Microsoft recently acquired data analytics start-up Metanautix, looking to integrate the company's Big Data expertise with Microsoft features such as SQL Server and the Cortana Analytics Suite. Metanautix's technology, which brings together the multitude of data sources available to companies in order to provide a more holistic view of information, enables IT teams to unite data from public and private clouds without the need for moving that information into a centralized system. Metanautix can also pull data from systems including SQL Server, Oracle, and Salesforce.

According to a statement by Joseph Sirosh, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Data Group, the acquisition is one component of Microsoft's larger effort to improve data usage. Sirosh also noted that details about incorporating Metanautix at Microsoft are scarce at the moment:

"In the coming months, we will have more to share about how we will bring Metanautix technology into the Microsoft data platform, including SQL Server and the Cortana Analytics Suite. As someone who has led complex, large scale data warehousing projects myself, I am extremely excited about the technology and talent we are bringing to Microsoft with this acquisition. It is another important part of our ongoing efforts to build the intelligent cloud and help our customers fully realize the value of their data."

One company that already employs Metanautix capabilities is digital image storehouse Shutterfly, which utilizes the technology for its marketing campaign analytics. According to a statement, Metanautix cofounder and CEO Theo Vassilakis sees the new partnership with Microsoft as a means of improving upon the company's solutions:

"Metanautix started out with the vision to integrate the data supply chain by building the Quest data compute engine that enables scalable SQL access to any data. Three years in, we can take this work to the next level by joining forces with Microsoft. We look forward to being part of Microsoft's important efforts with Azure and SQL Server to give enterprise customers a unified view of all of their data across cloud and on-premises systems."
